Don Jackson Wins National Award

BATW member Ann Jackson recently notified us that her husband and fellow member Don Jackson just received “The President’s Call To Service Award” at a recent event, after being nominated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This national award was established in 2003 by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to recognize and appreciate the commitment of individuals to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. In addition to the award, he received a personal congratulatory letter from President Obama.
Ann was proud to report that for the last 30 years Don has been involved in community volunteering, and for more than 10 years has been very active volunteering at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital as Special Projects Coordinator assigned to the Chaplain’s office. One of his ideas has been the development of a Memorial Rose Garden adjoining the chapel, which has become an important addition to the campus. Don’s efforts to secure donations of hundreds of roses, building materials and contractor’s labor to build paved brick pathways and an inviting gazebo have helped make it a wonderful and vital gathering place for patients, visitors and staff. Current expansion at the hospital, one of our country’s most highly respected facilities for spinal and head injury care/research, includes an even larger, second memorial garden now under development.
Ann adds: “For the last 11 years, whenever we’re not traveling, Don has averaged 20–30 hours a week volunteering. In addition to his many assignments at the hospital, he has volunteered for the Arthritis Foundation for 10 years, serving as chairman of numerous fund-raising events and on their Board of Directors for seven years. In the past, he has also volunteered as president of two nonprofit organizations.
Ann lightheartedly suggests his current and on-going challenge is making concerted efforts to say “no” to additional volunteer activity requests.
